Alabama Moving Regulations

Alabama’s Public Service Commission regulates Alabama’s Intra-State household goods moving.

Alabama Moving Rules and Regulations

Alabama household goods carriers are required to hold a certificate of public convenience and necessity granted by the Alabama Public Service Commission (APSC).

In Alabama, local moves are moves that remain wholly within the police jurisdiction of an incorporated city or town.  All other moves are APSC regulated intrastate moves.

Alabama statute requires these carriers to publish and file with the APSC, tariffs containing all the rates, fares and charges for transportation and all services in connection therewith of household goods in intrastate commerce.   Household goods tariffs on file with the APSC contain hourly charges for moves up to 30 miles and weight based charges for above 30 miles.

Alabama statute states that no common carrier by motor vehicle shall charge of demand or collect or receive a greater or less or different compensation for transportation or for any service in connection therewith between the points enumerated in such tariff than the rates, fares and charges specified in the tariffs in effect at the time.

For any questions pertaining to Alabama intrastate commerce, contact the APSC Transportation Division, Rates & Services, at 334-242-5172 or the web at www.psc.state.al.us.
