The Iowa Department of Transportation regulates Iowa’s Intrastate and local household moves. Local movers in Iowa are required to be licensed and insured through the Iowa Department of Transportation/Motor Carriers Services. The moving company is in charge of publishing a tariff and the tariff is filed and regulated by the Iowa DOT. This tariff outlines all of the services and charges for the movers, and the Iowa DOT holds all movers in the state of Iowa responsible for following by their published rates, policies and procedures as set forth by the DOT.
Most companies if the move is local will charge on an hourly basis, and over a certain distance charge by weight and distance. Movers can charge what they want as long as it is published with their tariff. Vehicles do need a DOT # followed by IA. The moving company is required to have an intrastate authority permit to operate in the state of Iowa.
One important thing to remember is to make sure your local mover carries workers compensation insurance and the proper licensing on equipment and vehicles.
